Montague heading to Nationals with DC Furies

As a walk on player in 2010, Senior Bethany Montague was somewhat hesitant about the sport of rugby. The former basketball player loved rugby’s speed and athleticism, but so much of the sport of rugby was foreign to her. Since then she’s grown into a standout player and provided leadership in nearly every spot in the back line.

Last summer, the Washington DC native dipped her toe into the waters of sevens rugby with the DC Furies. AIC is yet to compete in women’s sevens, but Bethany enjoyed the abbreviated version of the game and learning about the wide world of women’s club rugby.

A year later, she’s been selected on the final roster to represent the Furies at women’s sevens club nationals this year at in San Franciso this August 3rd and 4th.

Montague recalls how she found the news: “There’s another girl named Bethany on the team, and I originally thought it was her. I was sad at first but after going through the list a few times I realized we were both selected and I immediately jumped up and did my happy dance. I’m so thankful to the coaching staff.”

Best of luck to Bethany and the DC Furies this summer.
